This trek starts from Kareri village which is the base camp and passes through lush green forests of pine, oak and rhododendron, rocky grasslands and meadows. The lake remains frozen from December to April every year. This is not a very arduous trek and can be easily done by beginners. There is also a small Shiva temple near the lake. This trek provides some of the most stunning views.

How to Reach:

By Air: Gaggal Airport or Kangra Airport at Dharamshala is about 20 km away from McLeod Ganj. You can book a cab from the airport to Mcleodganj or Kareri Village.

By Train: Pathankot Railway Station, situated approximately 90 km away, is the closest broad-gauge railhead serving those headed to McLeod Ganj. You can easily book a cab from the railway station to Mcleodganj or Kareri village.

By Road: Mcleodganj is well connected with all the major cities of Himanchal and Delhi. You can book a cab for Kareri village from Mcleodganj which is about 35 km away.

  • Kareri Lake is a high altitude, shallow, freshwater lake south of the Dhauladhar range approximately 9 km northwest of Dharamsala in Kangra district, Himachal Pradesh.
  • Its surface is 3000 meters above sea level.
  • Snow melting from the Dhauladhar range serves as the source of the lake and a stream, Nyund is the outflow.
  • Since the source is fresh melting snow and the lake is shallow, water visibility is very high

MCLEOD GANJ TO KARERI VILLAGE (Height 2200m distance 13Km)
The trek goes through the pine forests and crosses several tribal villages on the way. Kareri is a Gaddi tribal village. Overnight stay in one of the village houses or in tents.

KARERI VILLAGE TO KARERI LAKE(Height 3500m distance 14 Km)

Trail goes through mixed forests of oak, rhododendron and pine.
First, 2 Km is a level walk and then there is steep ascent along Kareri Nullah Stream which has to be crossed over a number of times over improvised wooden bridges. Overnight stay in tents at bank of Kareri Lake.

KARERI LAKE TO KARERI VILLAGE (Height 2200 Mts. Distance 13 km)

After a short from the lake is a steep descent through the will came back to Kareri Village. This will be the last day of the Tour.
